Vietnamese Currency (VND)

Vietnamese currency, with the currency unit being the dong (symbol: ₫, ISO code: VND), is the only legal tender in Vietnam. This currency is issued and managed by the State Bank of Vietnam and is widely used in all daily transactions nationwide.

Types of Vietnamese currency in circulation

Currently, Vietnamese currency is mainly issued in two forms: paper money (cotton) and polymer money. Coins (metal) have been discontinued since 2011 and are no longer used in daily transactions.

1. Paper money (cotton):

  • Denominations: 1,000 VND, 2,000 VND, 5,000 VND, 10,000 VND, 20,000 VND.
  • Characteristics: Printed on cotton paper, which is more easily torn and counterfeited than polymer money.
  • Currently, low-denomination banknotes such as 1,000 VND, 2,000 VND, 5,000 VND are still in circulation but are rarely used in daily transactions.

2. Polymer money:

  • Denominations: 10,000 VND, 20,000 VND, 50,000 VND, 100,000 VND, 200,000 VND, 500,000 VND.
  • Features: Printed on polymer material, highly durable, waterproof and more difficult to counterfeit.
  • This is the type of money mainly used in daily transactions and has been issued since 2003.
    Coins (metal):
  • Coins have been issued since 2003 with denominations of 200 VND, 500 VND, 1,000 VND, 2,000 VND and 5,000 VND. However, due to its low usage and inconvenience in transactions, the State Bank of Vietnam has stopped issuing coins since 2011.

    Notes when using Vietnamese currency:

Checking real and fake money: Polymer money is now equipped with many security factors such as watermarks, color-changing ink, and security threads, helping users easily distinguish between real and fake money.
Money preservation: Paper money needs to be carefully preserved, avoiding tearing and moisture. Polymer money is more durable but should also avoid contact with chemicals or excessively high temperatures.

Use the correct denomination: When paying, use the correct denomination to avoid confusion and ensure smooth transactions.

Currently, Vietnamese currency is mainly polymer money with denominations from 10,000 VND to 500,000 VND, widely used in all daily transactions. Paper money and coins are still in circulation but are rarely used. Understanding the different types of currencies and how to use them will help you make transactions smoothly and safely.
