Personal Information Fraud

Protecting personal information is an extremely important issue in ensuring financial security for everyone. When your financial information falls into the wrong hands, the consequences can be serious, affecting not only your finances but also your personal reputation. With the development of information technology and online transactions, protecting personal information becomes even more important. However, sometimes, even though you have taken preventive measures, you can still become a victim of personal information abuse. In such cases, timely and appropriate action will help limit the damage and protect your rights.

Steps to take when your personal information is abused in Vietnam

  1. Report to the police
If you discover that you are a victim of personal information abuse, you should immediately report it to the local police. In Vietnam, you can file a fraud report with the police of the district or commune where you live. The police will record the information, investigate and make a record of the incident. This is very important in protecting your legal rights and as a basis for future remedies.
  2. Contact credit institutions and banks
If your bank account or credit card information has been compromised, you should immediately contact the bank or credit card issuer. Major banks in Vietnam, such as Vietcombank, BIDV, VietinBank, all have fraud prevention support departments. You should report that you are a victim of personal information abuse and request to lock your account, change your PIN, or credit card. In addition, if necessary, you can also ask the bank to support freezing your account to stop unauthorized transactions.
  3. Check and request credit information adjustment
In Vietnam, your credit information is stored at the National Credit Information Center (CIC) under the State Bank. When your personal information is abused, you need to contact CIC to check your credit information and request them to update the correct information. CIC provides a free credit information lookup service, helping you detect early signs of fraud and take timely measures.
  4. Keep information and work with consumer protection organizations
In Vietnam, consumer protection organizations such as the Vietnam Consumer Protection Association can support you when your rights are violated due to fraud. In addition to reporting to the police and banks, you should also keep all relevant evidence such as report minutes, letters or emails of transactions with credit institutions and related companies.

Precautions to protect personal information in Vietnam

  1. Check your credit report periodically
According to regulations of the State Bank of Vietnam, you have the right to check your credit report for free once a year through the Credit Information Center (CIC). Regular checks help you monitor your loans, financial transactions and detect early signs of fraud if any.
  2. Keep personal information confidential
Make sure not to share personal financial information such as credit card numbers, passwords or PINs with others. When transacting over the phone or online, only provide information on secure websites with security certificates (https). Avoid using passwords that are too simple and change your passwords regularly.
  3. Protecting Financial Documents
Be careful when keeping financial documents such as bills, bank statements, or credit agreements. Shred unused documents to prevent bad guys from collecting information from them. If you are away, ask a relative to keep important correspondence to avoid losing documents.
  4. Use security measures when transacting online
When shopping or transacting online, make sure the website you visit has a security certificate (https://). In addition, use security applications, such as two-factor authentication (2FA) or password generator software, to help protect your online accounts.

Protecting personal information is not a one-time task but an ongoing process. Controlling and protecting personal financial information needs to be done regularly and carefully. If you become a victim of identity theft, act quickly, report the incident to the authorities, and use tools like credit reporting and the FTC’s remediation plan to protect your assets and personal information.
